Kitchen Reflections

Freshly baked for the Sunday brunch table with Ekumfi Juice in attendance! (Those who know know! Smiley Face | Brunswick Bowling)

It felt very nostalgic making these muffins a few Sundays ago. Learnt these from my Mama’s kitchen but haven’t baked in a while until these Covid-times introduced a new tradition in our home. I remember how I used to help her bake the pies she sold at her shop in town. During vacations I would bake pies and carry them along to the shop. Often I would get ‘hijacked’ in the TroTro on my way to town with people asking “Ewuraba, wo pie no, ere ton anaa”? (Young lady, are those pies for sale?) I was always happy to sell half my wares before even opening shop!

So as I mixed the muffin ingredients together and rolled the pastry dough, I remembered the rock from which I was hewn…dear Mama. She taught me so well. She passed on so much and left a huge legacy. I miss her but as I stood in my kitchen and reflected on all the life lessons she taught me, I was so thankful for her life and was reminded how important it is to pass on this legacy to my children especially my daughters; a legacy of faith and trust in God, perseverance and purposeful living. My kids start giving each other knowing looks when I begin my “when we were young” stories.  They always say there goes Mummy! I tell them stories of my childhood and try to link it to where we are now as a family so they can connect the dots and see how God has moved in our lives.

I see my daughters on Grandma’s path with their baking antics. I feel rusty against these millennial chefs especially my first girl! But more than anything else, I pray that the faith of their grandmother, which she passed on to me will always be the foundation for their lives and a springboard for their future.

May God grant grace to all of us; mothers, fathers, guardians to pass on the rich legacy of our faith in Jesus Christ to our children.

When they think of us when we are long gone may it be with pride and joy in the spiritual legacy handed over to them.
That’s the best gift we can bequeath to them.

I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.
